What is Dysmenorrhea?

Dysmenorrhea refers to painful menstrual cramps that occur before or during a woman’s period. Many women experience discomfort in the lower abdomen, back, or thighs, which can be sharp, aching, or throbbing. While it’s normal to have some discomfort during menstruation, for those with dysmenorrhea, the pain can be severe enough to interfere with daily activities. Think of it as a persistent, deep pain that comes every month and is hard to ignore.

Causes of Dysmenorrhea
  • Overproduction of prostaglandins, hormones that cause the uterus to contract.
  • Conditions like endometriosis or fibroids, which can cause more intense pain.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) that affects the reproductive organs.
  • Stress and emotional tension, which may worsen the perception of pain.
  • Intrauterine device (IUD) use, especially copper IUDs, can cause cramping.
  • Hormonal imbalances affecting the menstrual cycle.
Symptoms of Dysmenorrhea
  • Sharp or throbbing pain in the lower abdomen, back, or thighs.
  • Nausea or vomiting, often accompanying severe cramps.
  • Diarrhea or loose stools during menstruation.
  • Fatigue or feeling excessively tired throughout the period.
  • Headaches or dizziness, which can occur alongside cramps.
  • Mood swings or irritability due to hormonal fluctuations and pain.
