Explore →Yoga poses for lower back arthritis are gentle moves that ease stiffness and support the lower spine. Yoga does not cure arthritis. This page lists safe poses by level, practice tips and warning signs. It does not replace medical care.
Understanding the Category
Lower back arthritis wears the joints and cartilage of the lumbar spine. It can cause stiffness and ache. These poses keep the spine moving and strengthen the muscles that support it. They do not reverse joint wear.

Common Questions
Yes, gentle yoga can help. It keeps the spine moving and builds the muscles that support it. Stay within pain free limits and check with your doctor first.
No. Yoga cannot reverse joint wear. Gentle poses may ease stiffness, build support and keep you moving. Most people do best with activity and medical advice.
Savasana, Makarasana, Apanasana and Marjariasana are gentle and load the back very little. Add Tadasana and Setubandhasana when you feel stable. Keep the spine long.
Avoid deep backbends such as Chakrasana and Ushtrasana, deep forward folds and forced twists. They can strain stiff joints. A low Bhujangasana is a mild option, with your doctor's approval.
Practice 10 to 20 minutes, most days. Short, gentle sessions work better than long ones. Add walking and avoid long periods of sitting.
Get urgent help for numbness around the bottom, bladder or bowel trouble, or loss of feeling in a leg. See a doctor if back pain lasts several weeks or wakes you at night.
